Shocks and Struts

Shocks and struts are used to absorb suspension movement and help keep control of your car firmly planted on the road. However, unlike shocks, struts are a major structural part of a car’s suspension. Struts take the place of the upper control arm and ball joint in the front suspension. The strut also supports or houses the suspension spring.

Worn out or faulty shocks and struts can result in many adverse conditions. The consequences of bad shocks or struts include premature tire wear, suspension damage, and – in extreme situations – possible loss of vehicle control. Some signs of faulty shocks or struts are:

  • Uneven tire wear or cupping of the tires

  • Hydraulic fluid leaking from the shock or strut body

  • Physical damage to the shock or strut body, such as dents

  • Excessive body roll while turning

  • The car nose dives when braking

  • The car squats excessively when accelerating

  • A bouncy or shaky ride

  • Excessive bounce when driving over bumps
